12/22/2019 0 Comments Week 12: I've come a long wayThis week I will be shadowing at The Davie county Health Department. I first got in touch with the Health and Human Services Director, Suzanne Wright, and set up a day and time best for me to come by, I was really hoping to get the weekend but unfortunately they are closed Saturday and Sunday. She was able to squeeze me in from 4-5pm on Wednesday and Thursday with Dr. Pirkle.
On Wednesday, since it was a short amount of time that we got to spend together so she showed me the basics. She let me try out some of the medical equipment on her such as the stethoscope, the digital fever thermometer, otoscope, and the blood pressure monitor. It was such a cool experience because usually I'm the one getting the equipment used on me. She didn't want to make any of her patients uncomfortable so I stepped out, but she did want me to listen to the way she communicated with the patients. On Thursday, Pirkle didn't have too much patients by the end of the day so we just sat in her room and I got to ask her questions about Medicinal School and her experience with that. I realized I have to set my priorities straight and my determination needs to increase in order for me to succeed. She majored in Spanish and I wanted to test her skills. hehe. I asked her some questions and see if she could have a conversation in Spanish with me, I was impressed because it was very good. I will not take being bilingual for granted ever again because I know it will come in handy for me in the future. The donations box did really good the previous week and I'm hoping it acquires some more considering this is the last week. By the end of Sunday evening the donations box had $52! A huge thank you to my mother for encouraging people throughout the week to donate. The final amount that we added up was $622. Giving the money to the children at Brenner's will be the best part of all of this for sure. Although I didn't reach my goal of $700, I am very happy with what I have accomplished, with the help of many. Thank you Gym 365 for sponsoring me and making the majority of the fundraising possible. My fitness journey has also come a long way. My stamina and muscle strength increased along with my diet improving. I lost 7 pounds, WHATT? Anyways if you stayed till the end... remember to stay healthy!!!

12/15/2019 0 Comments Week 11: ExperienceFor these last two weeks I will be focusing on raising the rest of what I need to meet my goal. I want to tell a big thank you to Gym 365 for sponsoring my fundraiser because I couldn't have done it without their support. I will no longer be going back to fundraise this week or the next due to my shadowing.
This week I will be shadowing pediatric specialist, Dr. McBride, at Brenner's. On Monday, I made the donations box more attention grabbing and made sure to let my social media pages such as Instagram and Facebook know to come visit Sandra's treasures and donate. On Saturday my mom is going to have a Christmas open house along with Santa, so I made flyers to encourage the most people I could to come because they could potentially donate. Thursday and Friday I had the opportunity to go shadow Dr. McBride after school. The director Cindy Caine was able to get me an hour of shadowing with her each day. At first I was kind of sad that I wasn't going to get as much time as I initially wanted at the beginning of this project but pediatrics run on a tight schedule and so am I currently. On Thursday McBride led me through the sanitation procedures in order to interact with some of her patients. Then she talked about how it is difficult to see stressed and worried families but how rewarding it feels to help their children and see them go home healthy. It is important to be patient and flexibility with this type of job. On Friday she asked me why I was interested in pediatrics and I answered with, "I love helping those who are in need, especially children". She told me that I should ask myself questions before pursuing this career. She said she is always optimistic when helping her patients and their families because having hope goes a long way. The whole experience was more than I could of asked for! Just as I expected. the donations box got a total of $47 by the end of Saturday evening, The fundraiser is now at $570. Even if I don't make it to my goal by the end of week 12 I will still be incredibly pleased because I feel like I have still come a long way not just for the fundraiser but myself too. Stay healthy!!!!! 12/8/2019 0 Comments Week 10: FaithI am getting so anxious with the dead line almost coming up. We are now 10 weeks in to the fundraiser and I have made good progress so I have faith that I can reach my goal. The previous weeks I had been feeling kind of down about where i'm at now, but I realized I need to have a positive mindset. Gym 365 has been sponsoring me for a little over 2 months now and there haven't been that many new faces lately so I have decided to bring more attention to the fundraiser at my mom's store. Business has been really good and i'm sure it will gain the rest of what needs to raised. I won't be doing that until week 11 and week 12 though so stayed tuned. Monday- On Monday I went after school because it is always the busiest around this time. I warmed up on the stair climber machine, definitely not easy and not fun but it's a great workout. I brought my signs and a couple that have already donated before wanted to do so again. The lady donated $10 for 40 weighted squats while her husband chose to help me with push-ups since he said I needed to increase my upper body strength. I did 40 push-ups (with some breaks) for also $10. Wednesday- On humpdayyyy I warmed up with a 5 minute jog on the treadmill. Afterwards I ran into the lady that does a fitness class there, she wanted to make a donation of $20 for doing her class that day. It was very intense and I was glad I took it because it was enough for the day. Friday- Finally Friday, I went later in the evening because I needed to get my article of the week done. Surprisingly there was a handful of people there that night that I had not seen before. A nice guy made a donation of $5 just to donate and so did his sister for 50 lunges. The donation box had $6 this week. There were a total of $56 donated this week YAYY! The fundraiser now has $523 raised, so excited to see what the next 2 weeks brings for me. Remember to stay healthy:) 12/1/2019 0 Comments Week 9: So close yet so farLast week I think I did a pretty good job advertising and collecting money for my fundraiser considering the fact that I am currently moving. I have really been enjoying watching my growth and seeing myself getting closer to my goal. I collected a total of $431 last week, which really encouraged me to work harder this week. Unfortunately the process of my family and I moving has been setting me back. I was able to make it to the gym twice this week, on Monday and Wednesday. Also the donation box at my mom's store got a total of $11 this week. Next week I will be in my new house and hopefully it will allow me to catch up to the days I have missed, relating to my productivity.
Monday- On Monday afternoon I warmed up with jogging on the treadmill for about 5 minutes. Afterwards my signs caught the attention of a lady who I had not seen before. She made a donation of $20 for a one minute wall sit, 100 jumping jacks, 50 dead lift squats with the weights, and 25 v-situps. I really enjoy when people pick a variety of exercises because it allows me reach all muscles of my body and makes the experience feel more effective to me. It was getting late so I left afterwards. Wednesday- On Wednesday I went to the gym very late. I warmed up with the punching bag in the back. I have recently been more into boxing because of the lady who is always back there. After I was done a man made a donation of $5 for 50 sit ups. There was nobody left in the gym after I finished the sit ups so I went home. Overall there were $36 collected this week, so it was a very slow week. The fundraiser now has $467 collected. I feel like I am so close yet so far which stresses me out. I am anxious to see how the rest of my weeks play out and if it affects my goal positively or negatively. Anyways, stay healthy!!!! 11/24/2019 0 Comments Week 8: A new passion discoveredStarting this Genius Hour project has opened many doors for me personally as a person and I am so thankful for that. I have grown a new passion for fundraising, helping others in general. While doing so I have also been exercising and helping my body and health. This has been an eye opener to many things I didn't know I could enjoy doing so much. Overall this journey has inspired me to keep doing this in the future.
I am currently moving and it has been difficult to get to the gym but I still managed to make it on Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Wednesday- On Wednesday I went in the afternoon and jogged on the treadmill to get me started before I tried to get any donations. Then an elderly woman made a donation of $5 for 25 crunches. She was really cute and sweet. A man made a kind donation of $25 for 25 lunges, 20 jumping jacks, 15 mountain climbers, and a one minute wall sit. Thursday- On Thursday I did crunches to warm up. Afterwards I went up to lady and she chose for me to run 10 minutes on the treadmill for $10. Then another man chose 15 leg raises on the pull up bar to strengthen my core for $5 since I kept taking breaks. oops Saturday- On Saturday there were barely any people there because I'm guessing most people left town to visit their families for thanksgiving. The owner of the gym made a generous donation of $15. Finally a lady made a donation of 5$ for 50 lunges right before I left. The donations box at my mom’s store got $7 this week. Now we are up $431 worth of donations. I am so happy that I am getting closer and closer to my goal! Remember to stay healthy!!! 11/17/2019 0 Comments Week 7: UpdateI kept my promise about taking the extra days off that we were getting to my advantage and use it to collect some donations since I was feeling behind the previous week. I am now back to update you guys! On Monday and Tuesday I went to Gym 365 at different times than I usually would go, which is in the afternoon. Since we had no school these days I went early in the morning. This gave me an opportunity to see some new faces that had yet to make donations to the fundraiser. I was so excited when I walked in on Monday morning to get more individuals to be a part of a great cause. I brought my boards like usual to advertise the fundraiser and display the exercises of your choice.
I first went up to a lady to tell her about my fundraiser and she wasn't interested. There have been many occasions where people say no, but I just move on to the next person because I understand not all people can or want to donate. Then I approached a man and he chose jump roping 30 times along with 50 crunches for $20. Then a lady wanted to be a part of the actual exercise which I very much enjoyed. She loved boxing so I boxed with her and with the punching bag for about 30 minutes. She also gave a donation of $20. Then on Tuesday, as soon as I walked in a man wanted to donate $10 just to donate. Since he didn't pick an exercise I ran on the treadmill for about 5 minutes. Then a lady donated $5 for 30 lunges. Finally on Saturday night I went back to the gym. A lady donated $10 for 40 weighted squats. Another lady donated $15 for a variety of exercises. I did a one minute plank, 10 push-ups, and 10 weighted deadlifts. The donations box at my mom’s store, Sandra’s Treasures, gathered a total amount of $15 this week. I am so pleased to say this was a great week and I am getting closer to my goal. We are now at $359, HOW EXCITING! There is no room for time to be wasted. Remember to stay healthy!!!! I've been feeling really disappointed and frustrated because I feel like I’m not making any progress. We are now at the halfway point of our genius hour projects and time is flying by so fast. I have definitely gathered a good amount of donations for my fundraiser as of now but in comparison to my goal of $700 dollars, I'm feeling disillusioned. Realizing how hard it has been to reach my goal I wish I could have made it a little lower.
On Monday night I made more signs to advertise my fundraiser and encourage people to donate. I set them up by my mom's store since business has been really good lately. I made a little donations box to put on the front desk. This idea worked out great because a total of $23 dollars were donated. I am so happy because I feel like I actually made really good progress this week. Tuesday & Wednesday- a lady offered me to run a mile for $15 dollars. Since my endurance isn't too high when it comes to running. I ran half on Tuesday and finished the rest on Wednesday. I also did 25 burpees for $5 dollars along with 35 weighted squats for $10 dollars on Tuesday afternoon. Finally on Wednesday I did 10 pushups and 10 pullups for $5 dollars. Thursday-I was feeling really sore and had very little energy to anything too intense that day so I took the easy sign to the gym. The "easy" sign includes wall sits, lunges, jumping jacks, crunches, curl ups, etc. I did a 5 minute wall sits for $5 dollars, I took breaks between each minute though. A kind couple made a donation of $20 dollars, 50 lunges for $10 dollars and a 5 minute plank with breaks for another $10 dollars. This week was amazing and gave me more faith in myself that I will accomplish my goal. We are now at $264 dollars in donations, AHHHH how exciting! Anyways talk to you all next week and remember to stay healthy!!! 10/30/2019 0 Comments Week 5: HalloweekendWhat a busy week it’s been! This week I decided to focus some more on my eating habits because I've been putting that off a bit and only focusing my attention and time towards working out at Gym 365 to raise money for the fundraiser. Since I wasn't able to make it to the gym last week, I will still be attending the gym this week. If i don't, two weeks worth of money will go down the drain. Time is crucial and I need to use it wisely. I will be documenting all of the food I eat this week along with my drinks. I eat my meals usually after going to the gym.
Tuesday- On Tuesday I ate a turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, and sprouts. Water with lemon was my drink. This day was a little busy because I have to help my mom with her store after school now. I was able to go to the gym for about 30 minutes, but $10 dollars were donated for 50 lunges. Wednesday- Humpday! I ate spaghetti with baked chicken Parmesan. Water with lemon was my drink. This day was a really good day because two people donated. One lady just wanted to donate $20 dollars, which was very kind of her. Then a man donated $10 dollars for 50 crunches. Thursday- On Thursday it was Halloween so my family made chicken pot pie soup with biscuits to match the holiday. Sweet tea was my drink. It’s tradition to make chicken stew but we decided to make that instead this year. With it being Halloween night, there wasn’t very much money collected. I did 100 jumping jacks for $15 and then ran half a mile just for own benefit because the gym was mostly empty. There was $55 dollars collected and we are now at $181 dollars, stay healthy!!!!! 10/23/2019 1 Comment Week 4: Having a T-Riffic Time![]() This week I am going to be publicizing all of my posters and the GoFundMe page I set up so people don't forget about the fundraiser. I republished the link on my social media pages such as Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat. My mother recently opened up her own store, Sandra's Treasures Vintage Antiques, located at 5230 Highway 158 Advance next to The Tire Shop where I have set up some of my posters by the entrance so as people walk in they can acknowledge it. On Tuesday I put on a T-Rex Halloween costume on to advertise not only the opening of her store but also my fundraiser to the people driving by. I then got the idea to put it on outside of the gym since the area is usually busy. My idea worked so well, as people were driving by to get to the Dollar General, Maddie Cakes, or Asian View nearby they were giving a dollar or so into a bucket I had for donations. Throughout the week I made 30 dollars because I had to help my mom most of the week and couldn't make it to the gym. Unfortunately no money has been donated to the GoFundMe this week. We are 1/3 of the way there and have 126 dollars raised. Stay healthy!!!!!! 10/16/2019 2 Comments Week 3: The clock is ticking![]() We are now a quarter of the way there kiddos! Feels like time is flying by and I'm racing time. My goal this week was to advertise my fundraiser to the max at Gym 365 because I am struggling to find sponsors to contribute there. My goal was to make a lot of colorful posters to put in the entrance so as much people as possible could see it and contribute. The posters helped a lot and I made a total of $40 dollars this week. On Monday, the first lady chose her exercise of choice to be squats. I made $10 dollars after doing 40 squats with 45 pounds. She gave me 25 cents a squat which I thought was very generous of her. I was getting a little tired at the end but I tried to do as many as I could to get more money donated. On Tuesday another man chose for me to do sit ups. I told him about the same amount that I did the day before and he agreed to the same amount for the sit ups. Throughout Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday ran 10 miles. On the poster that I made on of the choices was $2 a mile and many just picked that choice of exercise. Unfortunately no money was donated to the GoFundMe, but I am so excited to announce we have a total of $96 raised so far. Stay healthy!!!!! |
